Thanks for the answer. I guess I should've also mentioned that this is a wired controller. All the steps provided in the link were mostly for Bluetooth controllers.

Have you tried updating you controller?
Launch the Xbox Accessories app.
Connect your Xbox One controller to your PC.
With the Xbox Accessories app open, if a controller update is required, a message should pop up saying "Update Required."
Click "Close" once your controller has updated.
You may use this support article as a reference for updating your controller wired to your pc.

Unfortunately, the app won't even recognize my controller. I had a few other xbox controllers lying around and I tried those. They also show up as the unknown usb device. It seems like my controller drivers just completely broke themselves

I believe I fixed it!
The solution for me I think was the chipset drivers that were causing issues. I uninstalled my chipset drivers then restarted my pc and the controller worked! I have since installed new chipset drivers and it still seems to be working fine. It also now shows up in device manager as normal.

I have an amd cpu and to uninstall my chipset drivers I simply just hit the windows key and typed "add or remove programs" them I just went into my list of apps, found the drivers and uninstalled them.

Can you be a little more specific? I have AMD as well and this is the exact same thing happening to me. What exactly did you uninstall and reinstall?
Nvm I apparently just needed to use a different order than it came with. Don't know why it did that seeing that it worked properly for 3 days with that cord.

I can't exactly remember what it's called since I cannot be at my computer right now but it should be called something along the lines of AMD chipset drivers on add or remove programs. If you have never installed chipset drivers then you can try installing some off of AMD's website and see if that fixes it for you.
